Neighbourhood Watch Scheme for Sax
In these times of unemployment and deprivation the community have a real fear of rising crime rates, the price of base and precious metals are at an all time high, not only this but second hand and stolen goods are now easily disposed of via a “Rastro” or Car Boot Sale, so the prospect of being robbed is becoming a fact of life and this is the driving force in the community for protection by the Guardia Civil, National & Local Police Forces.
We understand that the Town is a place that is also likely to be threatened by crime but not as much as the country houses that the Spanish and Foreigners have invested so much time and money into making their homes. The foreigners have worked hard to get what they want and invested a lot of their time and savings into choosing Sax as their home away from home, and value their life and friendships that they have built up here in the community.
We also understand that, with these times of crisis, that the cost of patrolling the vast area of the country community housing is not an easy thing to do with the cutback’s and restrictions that are put into all aspects of policing and security within the community, which is why we believe that we the community can help the local law enforcement departments in their fight against crime in the Sax area, the way forward, we think, is to implement the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme into this area.
There are two reasons we feel that a Neighbourhood watch scheme should be set up here in Sax, the first being that in other areas of Spain this scheme has proved to be very successful and has been given support by the local and foreign community including the Town Halls, National Police, Guardia Civil, and Polica Local.
The residents were plagued by crime with street robberies occurring nearly every day and house robberies a nightly occurrence, something had to be done, and done quickly. So Neighbourhood Watch was set up by some English residents who were involved with the scheme back in England. We are convinced that the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is needed and would be welcomed here in Sax by both Spanish & English communities.
The second reason would be the proof that a scheme like this would reduce crime in this area if it was given a chance, rather than put on the shelf because of lack of funding. Funds can be raised from different sources if backed by the right people and an approach for sponsorship from local companies, banks, and insurance companies were made by official bodies working in partnership with the community.
The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme can only work if the community and local law enforcement agencies worked together by exchanging information about criminal activities within the area.
By exchanging information we mean that the local law enforcement agencies pass information to an area co-ordinator of the NWS concerning certain criminal activity in an area, the co-ordinator would then pass this information to the members of the NWS who would then be the eyes and ears of the Law enforcement agency/NWS and if they see or hear anything of a suspicious nature, would report back to the area co-ordinator who, in turn, would inform the relevant law enforcement agency of that information so that they, the law enforcement agency, can take the relevant action. If however the incident is of an emergency situation then the co-coordinator or member of the NWS would report straight back to the Law enforcement agency direct to save time so the agency could respond with urgency in that matter.
So to sum up the application of starting a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in Sax, I would like to point out the benefits of this scheme to and for the community.
- If this scheme is supported and backed by the Town Hall, the community would be more inclined to become a member of the scheme and offer their support to it.
- Once we have more support for the scheme there would be more offers of sponsorship for purchasing the signs that would needed around the town, giving the supporters a chance to be involved with this innovative crime prevention scheme.
- Once the scheme was properly advertised within the area it would deter crime in the town and country.
- The more people who enlisted into the scheme would mean more eyes on the ground supporting the law enforcement agencies to do their job.
- This in turn would give the community confidence with the local law enforcement agencies and the local government who worked hard in supporting the scheme.
I do hope that this will convince you to support us in our endeavour to make the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme for Sax a successful scheme, Thank you.
